FBC Brooklyn Church Covenant
Having been led, as we believe, by the Divine working of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, into eternal salvation by Jesus Christ, and, on the profession of our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord over our lives, having been baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ for the glory of God.
As members of Jesus Christ and of First Baptist Church of Brooklyn, and only by the Spirit's enabling, we most solemnly and joyfully covenant together to display and declare the greatness of Christ in all of life:
We will display and declare the greatness of Christ in our personal lives by aiming to glorify God in every word, motive, thought and action. We will regularly commune with God in prayer and meditation on the Scriptures, confessing our sins, and living by faith in the redemptive work of Christ. We will abstain from harmful substances and practices that will impede our judgments and/or prevent us from living fully beyond reproach. We will joyfully and fearfully anticipate the Lord’s appearance, knowing that we each will stand in judgment before the Almighty for every word, motive, thought and action.
We will display and declare the greatness of Christ in the home by engaging in family worship and discipleship. We will give parental nurture and discipleship to all children entrusted to our care, to educate them in the gospel and the nature, ways and works of God. We will seek the salvation and spiritual growth of each family member, praying regularly for each other.
We will display and declare the greatness of Christ in this church by promoting the advancement of the witness of this church, supporting the church’s worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine. We will promote the church’s prosperity and spirituality through cheerful and regular contribution to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel to the nations.
We will relate to other members in brotherly love, not forsaking our gatherings together, but in seeking the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. We will watch over one another in patience and in gentleness, rejoicing at others’ happiness, yet also giving affectionate care and sympathy, and aid in sickness and distress. We will promote an appropriate use of liberty while being slow to take offense, always ready for reconciliation. We will avoid tattling, backbiting and gossip, only seeking to edify others.
We will faithfully promote the spiritual growth of the church, praying regularly for the leaders and the members, and encouraging and admonishing fellow members when appropriate.
We will display and declare the greatness of Christ in the world by promoting Christian love to our neighbors with careful wisdom and discernment in our witness. We will be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements and exemplary in behavior. We will make every effort to seek the salvation of neighbors and the nations.
We will, should we move from this place, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.
May the God of endurance and encouragement, who is able to strengthen us according to the Gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, grant us to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together we may, with one voice, glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. To Him be glory forever and ever through Jesus Christ. Amen.
